What can I eat after dental implant surgery?

Written by the Klamer Family Dentistry team · Published 2026-08-13

For the first day or two after dental implant surgery, stick to cool, soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, and lukewarm soup. Avoid chewing near the implant, skip straws, and slowly work back toward firmer foods over the next few weeks as the area heals.

Right after implant surgery, your job is easy: don't disturb the site while it settles. What you eat plays a big part in that. Soft, gentle foods keep you nourished without putting pressure on the healing area, and a few smart habits protect the work your dentist just did.

What should you eat the first 24 to 48 hours?

Think cool and soft. Your gums are tender, and heat can encourage bleeding early on. Good picks include:

  • Yogurt, pudding, and applesauce
  • Smoothies and protein shakes (spooned, not sipped through a straw)
  • Mashed potatoes and blended soups, served lukewarm
  • Scrambled eggs and soft cheese

Skip the straw. The suction can loosen the clot that's forming and slow you down. Chew on the opposite side, and stay away from anything crunchy, spicy, or very hot.

How does eating change week by week?

Days 3 to 7

Swelling usually starts easing, and you can add a little texture. Soft pasta, oatmeal, well-cooked vegetables, flaky fish, and ripe bananas are fair game. Keep everything soft enough to mash with a fork, and keep chewing away from the implant.

Weeks 2 to 3

Most people feel noticeably better. You can move toward foods that need a bit more chewing — soft sandwiches, tender chicken, cooked grains. Let comfort be your guide. If something hurts, back off and give it more time.

Weeks 4 and beyond

The gum tissue keeps maturing while the implant bonds with your bone underneath, a slower process that takes months. You'll likely eat close to normal by now, but hold off on hard, sticky, or crunchy foods near the site until Dr. Klamer says the area is fully healed.

A few habits that help you heal

  • Stay hydrated with water throughout the day.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals once your dentist okays it.
  • Don't smoke — it slows healing more than most people expect.
  • Take small bites and eat slowly.

Everyone heals at their own pace, so treat these timelines as a general map, not a rulebook. If you notice increasing pain, swelling that won't quit, or bleeding that doesn't settle, call Klamer Family Dentistry in Kearney. Our Implants team would rather hear from you early than have you wait it out. And if a problem feels urgent, our Emergency Services are here for that too.

Related questions

When can I eat normally again after an implant?

Most people return to a fairly normal diet within a few weeks, but full healing of the implant into the bone takes several months. Your dentist will let you know when it's safe to chew firmly on that side.

Can I drink coffee after implant surgery?

Wait until the first day or two has passed, then keep it lukewarm rather than hot. Hot drinks can irritate the site and encourage bleeding early on.

What foods should I avoid while healing?

Steer clear of crunchy, sticky, spicy, and very hot foods, along with anything you'd chew directly on the implant. Nuts, popcorn, and chewy candy are best saved for later.
